Tensions rose in Igwuruta Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the k!lling of a youth leader, Festus Nchelem, by suspected herders.
Festus, a former Secretary of Omuolu-Omunwei Community in Igwuruta, was reportedly k!lled during an attack on February 11, 2026.
Eyewitnesses said armed men, dressed like herders, attacked a local vigilante group, dragged Festus from his vehicle, and st@bbed him multiple times, leading to his d3ath.
Several others, including a vigilante named Charles, sustained injuries.
The assailants, who reportedly arrived on over 40 motorcycles, fled the scene immediately after the attack.
The incident sparked a peaceful protest by residents demanding justice and enhanced security in the area.
On Thursday, youths of the community staged a protest, carrying placards and demanding an end to cattle rearing, motorcycle operations, and scavenging activities in the area. They also warned that any Northerner with malicious intentions should leave the community.
Reading a communique on behalf of the youths, Gilead Chimenem condemned the k1lling and called for urgent action.
“The Igwuruta community is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic m8rder of our son, Nchelem Samuel Festus, k!lled on February 10, 2026, by Aboki bike riders within our land,” he said.
Chimenem noted that ongoing rapes, kidnappings, and other criminal activities have disrupted the peace of Igwuruta, a once peaceful and welcoming community.
He demanded the closure of scrap sites, a halt to motorcycle operations by Northerners, and the immediate evacuation of all cattle herders from local farmlands and forests.
He urged security agencies to act within 48 hours, warning that failure to do so may compel the community to take necessary measures to protect lives and property.
In response, Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, Charles Wobodo, banned motorcycle operations in Igwuruta between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. until further notice.
Speaking during a visit to the family of the deceased, Wobodo said the measure is aimed at curbing kidnapping, rape, and killings in the area.
“Some criminals exploit motorcycles to perpetuate insecurity. Those involved will face the full weight of the law,” he said, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
A senior police officer at Igwuruta Divisional Police Headquarters, who spoke anonymously, told punch that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the killing, saying that investigations are ongoing.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident that led to the death of the youth. Calm has returned to the area and the investigation is ongoing,” she stated.
