Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane and his wife, Keyshia Ka’Oir, have opened up about his struggle with schizophrenia and how they’ve learned to manage the condition as a family.
During their interview on The Breakfast Club on Monday, October 20, Keyshia explained that she can now recognise the early signs of a mental health episode and quickly takes steps to prevent it from escalating.
“I have a system — I take his apps off his phone,” she said. “First thing I do, I delete Instagram. I delete everything. Even if I gotta change his password, I’m changing it because I don’t need the public to know he’s having an episode.”
She added that she closely monitors his behaviour to spot early warnings. “He doesn’t speak to you, he wants to be left alone, he doesn’t eat, he doesn’t sleep. Even his text messages change — there’s a period after every word. That’s when I know.”
When Charlamagne Tha God compared Gucci’s experience to Kim Kardashian’s past revelation about Kanye West giving away cars during manic episodes, Gucci admitted he used to do something similar — but with jewelry.
“I gave away jewelry. Jewelry costs so much, I would give my friends jewelry. They knew I wasn’t well, but they’d take it,” he said. “When I got out of jail, I cut off all my friends. I’m like, ‘Damn, they was taking advantage.’”
Gucci Mane, who recently released his book Episodes alongside a music project of the same name, married Keyshia Ka’Oir in 2017. The couple share two children — a son, Ice, and a daughter, Iceland, born in 2023.
