Real Madrid have suffered a huge injury blow ahead of their UCL quarter-final fixture against the Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid’s Champions League (UCL) ambitions have taken a major hit following the news that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has suffered a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps.
The Belgian international was substituted at half-time during Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Tuesday. While head coach Álvaro Arbeloa initially described the move as “precautionary,” official tests conducted on Thursday, March 19, 2026, revealed a more serious tear than first feared.
According to reports from COPE and Diario AS, the injury is expected to keep Courtois out of action for four to six weeks. This timeline effectively rules him out of both legs of the high-stakes Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich in April.
The 33-year-old will also miss several key domestic fixtures, including:
- The Madrid Derby vs. Atlético Madrid (March 22)
- La Liga clashes against Mallorca, Girona, and Deportivo Alavés.
Real Madrid released a brief medical report confirming the diagnosis:
“Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His condition will be monitored.”
With Courtois sidelined, Real Madrid will once again rely on Andriy Lunin. The Ukrainian goalkeeper, who gained significant experience during Courtois’ previous ACL recovery, will be tasked with protecting the goal during the most defining stretch of the season.
