Wayne Rooney has slammed Manchester United supporter Frank Illett, known online as The United Strand, accusing him of distracting attention from the team with his viral haircut challenge.
Illett vowed not to cut his hair until United win five consecutive matches, a pledge that has gained global traction and raised money for charity.
Heading into Tuesday’s clash with West Ham, Michael Carrick’s side had won four in a row, fuelling anticipation that the long-running stunt could finally end.
Instead, a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium extended Illett’s wait. Substitute Benjamin Sesko salvaged a late point for United, but it was not enough to secure the fifth straight victory required.
Rooney questions focus
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast before the match, Rooney made clear his frustration.
“I’d put him to the other side of the country. He is doing my head in,” Rooney said. “We are talking about Michael Carrick and Man United trying to win their fifth game in a row and the whole thing is about this guy getting his haircut. I bet he is devastated if Man United win because he will be irrelevant.”
Illett, however, insisted the challenge is about fundraising rather than attention.
“The longer the better for charity,” he said on his livestream. “I don’t want this to be about me at all and I’m sure that it probably will be, but it is still unbeaten and good form.”
Carrick and players play It down
Carrick distanced the squad from the online narrative.
“I can say I’m aware of it, yeah. My kids have made me aware of it, if anything, but it certainly won’t go into the team talk from a professional level,” he said. “It does make me smile but it won’t have an impact ultimately in the end.”
Club captain Bruno Fernandes was equally dismissive. “No, no, I need to book for myself. I don’t really look at other people if they need to go to the hairdresser. That’s not important for me.”
United now face a short break before returning to league action against Everton on February 23, with their top-four ambitions still intact despite the setback in east London.
