As the football world counts down to the 2026 World Cup there have been security concerns are growing over Mexico’s role as a host nation.

Mexico hss witnessed unrest in the past few days following violent clashes between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and Mexican armed forces. The unrest reportedly intensified after a major security operation targeting cartel leadership, triggering blockades, arson attacks and heavy gunfire in parts of Jalisco and surrounding areas.

Guadalajara which is one of Mexico’designated host cities for the 2026 tournament has been particularly affected, with domestic Liga MX fixtures postponed as authorities attempt to restore order. The incidents have sparked widespread debate on social media, where some users are calling for FIFA to reconsider Mexico’s hosting rights.

There have been online calls to take the competition away from Mexico with less than four monthd, there has been no official announcement from FIFA or Mexican authorities indicating that World Cup matches will be cancelled or relocated. Preparations for the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, are currently proceeding as planned.

Security experts note that major international tournaments typically involve extensive coordination between local governments, national security agencies and global football bodies. However, the focus remains on stabilising affected regions, while officials continue planning for what is expected to be one of the biggest World Cups in history.
