Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda has defended his late decision to replace Nigerian striker Akor Adams with Alexis Sánchez during Sunday’s 1-1 La Liga draw against Girona.

He insists the change was made to maximise impact in the decisive phase of the match.

Sevilla were trailing 1-0 when Adams was withdrawn in the 74th minute at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium.

Almeyda opted to introduce Sánchez, banking on the Chilean forward’s experience as the hosts intensified their search for an equaliser.

The tactical switch drew criticism from sections of the home support, who felt Adams’ physical presence could have been vital as Sevilla pushed forward.

However, the hosts eventually salvaged a point when defender Kike Salas struck late to cancel out Girona’s lead.

Almeyda explains tactical switch

Addressing the decision after the match, Almeyda made it clear that Sánchez was signed specifically to influence games at critical moments.

“Alexis had to play that decisive part of the game, because that’s what he came for,” the Sevilla coach said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Almeyda rejected the suggestion that Adams’ removal weakened Sevilla’s attacking threat, arguing that the team’s issues in front of goal went beyond the presence of a traditional striker.

“With or without a reference point, they haven’t scored a header because, in addition, the crosses aren’t the best,” he added.

Adams’ form remains strong

Despite being substituted, Adams continues to be one of Sevilla’s most influential players in recent weeks.

The Nigerian striker has scored four goals and registered one assist in his last five La Liga appearances, emerging as a key figure in the club’s upturn in form.

His contributions have helped Sevilla move away from relegation concerns and remain within touching distance of the European qualification places, keeping their season objectives alive.

The draw leaves Sevilla with mixed feelings: frustration at missed opportunities, but encouragement from their ability to recover late in the game..
