Nigerian comedian and activist Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has reflected on the October 20 #EndSARS incident, expressing concern over the challenges Nigeria continues to face six years later.
In a statement marking the anniversary, the entertainer highlighted persistent issues such as insecurity, hunger, poor healthcare and corruption, questioning the progress made since the historic protests against police brutality.
“Six years later, we are still dealing with insecurity, hunger, poor healthcare and the highest levels of corruption and impunity,” Mr Macaroni said.
The #EndSARS protests began in October 2020, as thousands of Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The movement gained nationwide and international attention, with young Nigerians calling for police reform, accountability and improved governance.
October 20 remains a significant date in the history of the protests following the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos in 2020. The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for justice and accountability.
Mr Macaroni, who actively participated in the protests, has continued to speak out on issues affecting the country. His anniversary message draws attention to concerns about insecurity, the rising cost of living, access to healthcare and accountability in public office.
His remarks have also renewed attention on the demands that inspired the #EndSARS movement and the broader question of whether the concerns raised by protesters have been adequately addressed.
