Afrobeats sensation Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has sparked conversations on social media after making a candid statement about his journey in the music industry.
In a clip from his upcoming HBO documentary, Long Live Lagos, released on Monday, November 25, Wizkid revealed that he navigated his career without a clear plan.
“There was no blueprint for me. I had to create my own path,” he explained.
He also acknowledged the influence of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, crediting him as a major inspiration for his musical ambitions.
“Fela Kuti played a huge role in making me believe I could succeed in music,” Wizkid added.
However, his remarks about not having a blueprint have stirred debate online. Some fans argue that Wizkid may have downplayed the role of Banky W and other music veterans who contributed to shaping the path for the current generation of artists.
Wizkid began his professional career in 2009 when he signed with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.), the label co-owned by Banky W. He departed from the label in 2013 after releasing two albums: his debut Superstar and Ayo.
