Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, has said that loanee Marcus Rashford will have to adopt a different role at the club.
He said this while explaining his decision to deploy the England striker in a different position during their 5-0 pre-season friendly win over Daegu.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United this summer, and the Catalans could sign him for €30 million at the end of the season if they wish.
Rashford’s first game for the Catalans was on July 27, when he came off the bench in their 3-1 win over Vissel Kobe.
In the game against Daegu, Rashford came off the bench to replace Robert Lewandowski in the 46th minute, taking up the striker’s role.
He netted his first goal for Hansi Flick’s side in the 65th minute of the game to seal their win while playing as a number 9.
Speaking after the match, as quoted by AS, the German gaffer explained his decision to experiment with Marcus Rashford.
Rashford has played most of his football career as a winger.
“He can play at number 9 or number 11. We changed it because we had to be careful with Ferrán. We wanted to see how he adapted to the position,” Flick said.
Ferran Torres is the next number 9 after Lewandowski at the club, but Rashford adapting to the striker role could be beneficial for the club, with the Poland international nearing retirement.
