Manchester United’s board has accepted that they overpriced and overpaid for Brazilian winger Antony.

According to ESPN, the club’s hierarchy has privately conceded that they overpaid for the winger.

Antony arrived at Old Trafford last summer and was one of the players manager Erik ten Hag asked the Red Devils chiefs to get for him from his former club, Ajax.

United appeared desperate to make some recruitment at the time and paid £85 million for the Brazilian.

Since joining United, Antony has already faced criticism for some of his performances this season.

ESPN reports that United’s board accepted that they spent too much on signing the Brazil international but maintained there were three key reasons they agreed to such a significant outlay with the Dutch side.

One of the reasons, according to the report, was that there were a lack of alternatives to Antony in his position.

A United source told ESPN: “We’ve paid for the player we think he can become, not the one he is now.”

According to the source, United signed Antony because they were ‘impressed’ by the player’s motivation to sign for the Red Devils.
