Two currency exchange dealers were k!lled when suspected terrorists attacked the Durusar Gawo currency market in Kurdula District, Gudu Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, January 11, 2025.

According to the PPRO, the attackers arrived around midday on January 8, 2026 and opened fire on traders, k!lling one person instantly, while the second victim later d!ed at Dogon Dutse Hospital.

“The attack happened around mid-day when the gunmen opened fire on traders. One person d!ed on the spot, while the second victim d!ed later in the hospital,” the PPRO said.

He explained that the command has commenced investigations into the incident and intensified deployments to vulnerable border communities in the area.

The Durusar Gawo market is a major currency and trade hub between Nigeria and the Niger Republic, drawing traders, currency exchangers and livestock dealers from both countries.

Residents identified the victims as Alhaji Ummaru Kure (pictured) and Alhaji Sani, both currency dealers, with one reportedly operating from the Niger side of the border.

Residents said the attackers, believed to be Lakurawa bandits, seized money in both local and foreign currencies before fleeing.

Residents also said the security situation in Gudu and neighbouring Tangaza Local Government Areas has deteriorated in recent months, forcing schools to close and leaving communities in fear of further attacks.

A resident claimed that Kurdula, the district headquarters, has no permanent security presence and that the nearest security post is about 45 kilometres away, making response time slow.

He added that communities in Bachaka district rely on support from Arewa Dandi Local Government Area in Kebbi State due to proximity, rather than from within Sokoto State.

Residents appealed to the Sokoto State Government, security agencies and the Federal Government to strengthen security presence across the Nigeria–Niger border belt.
