UCL: It could be worse – Michael Owen reveals position Chelsea will finish next season

Former Liverpool and England striker, Michael Owen has told Chelsea to open their doors to allow a number of players leave the club this summer.

Owen pointed out that the club will be in better health following a summer clear-out, saying the situation could be worse if the Blues fail to sort their problems as fast as possible.

The former Manchester United striker said this after watching the west London side suffer their 13th defeat of the season, being the fourth straight loss under interim manager Frank Lampard.

Real Madrid beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Bernabeu last week and repeated the same scoreline at Stamford Bridge last night to dump them out of the Champions League.

The Blues have over 30 first-team players in their payroll and Michael Owen is of the opinion that some of them should be allowed to find some other clubs.

“I don’t think there’s as many problems as you might think,” Owen said.

“With a little bit of a clear-out, a smaller squad and some stability, it’s almost impossible to think they will finish in the bottom-half again next season.

“They will bounce back and be a top-six team, I’m certain of that. All is not lost – they’ve got some great players, there’s a lot going for this club. They just need to sort out some of these problems but it could be a lot worse,” he said.

The Blues return to Premier League action next Wednesday against west London rivals Brentford.
