Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has explained why he took off Bukayo Saka in the second half against Bayer Leverkusen in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg.

Saka made way for Noni Madueke around the hour mark at the Bay Arena.

Madueke was eventually fouled for the penalty that Kai Havertz converted in the 89th minute to earn the Gunners a 1-1 draw.

In a post-match interview, Arteta admitted he needed something different from the right wing.

He said: “I thought that we needed something else.

“Noni has been contributing and being a real threat and I decided to make the change.”

Arteta also praised Noni Madueke, who won the penalty. “It’s not surprising.

“That’s his greatest strength. He consistently attempts bold dribbles and poses a threat to opponents.”
