The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reacted to the case involving a lecturer, Dr. Kadiri Akeem Babalola, accused of raping a female undergraduate student in his office.

According to the student, who asked to remain anonymous, the incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday, August 16, when she went to the lecturer’s office to sort out issues about her result,

A non-governmental organisation, Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation (InclusiveSWEF), where the victim reported the case, said rather than Dr. Kadiri attending to the undergraduate’s result issues, he allegedly raped her.

The NGO reported the case to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command. The state Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa then issued a warrant of arrest for Dr. Kadiri through the state High Court.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday, September 6, stated that the lecturer was arrested and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.

UNILAG’s spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, in a statement on Thursday, stated that the university is aware of the investigation and is cooperating with the police.

“UNILAG Management, on August 28, received a letter from the Nigeria Police Force, inviting an employee of the university for questioning. The employee was immediately informed of the development and advised to comply,” Alaga-Ibraheem said.

“On August 29, the employee complied. While we are not yet privy to the full details of the incident that led to the arrest of the employee

“We are fully aware that the investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the matter is resolved in the interest of justice. ”
