Nigerian rapper and singer, Erigga, has voiced his disappointment over what he described as Nigerians’ tendency to celebrate foreign artists while giving less recognition to local stars.

In a recent interview with Yanga FM, the Warri-born musician commented on the Headies Awards being moved to the United States. He explained that the relocation highlights a deeper issue the preference for international validation over honoring achievements within the country.

Erigga noted that although Nigeria has a vibrant music scene with massive support and impressive talent, many people still perceive foreign platforms as more prestigious.

He said, “Nigerians have this mentality of disregarding our own. The average person here would rather brag about 300 people dancing in London than show you 5,000 people filling up a concert venue in Nigeria.”

The rapper emphasized that music is universal, and people should take pride in what comes from their own culture, just as other countries do.

“We have a serious disconnect. We admire what’s outside more than what we have here,” he added.

Erigga also shared how some people ask him to rap in English, implying that he should switch styles to appeal to certain audiences. Responding to such requests, he said, “Sometimes they tell me, ‘Erigga, do one English rap,’ and I’m like, am I an English professor? I am speaking to the people I grew up with and understand.”
