Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that she is not entirely comfortable being addressed as the “Queen of Afrobeats.”
The music star noted that while she values the love and admiration from fans, she feels the title should not be limited to her alone, as many other female artistes are equally deserving of the recognition.
In a recent chat with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa explained that although the tag is flattering, she prefers not to embrace it fully because it comes with heavy expectations.
“People call me the Queen of Afrobeats, and I appreciate it,” she said. “But honestly, there are a lot of us who are queens.”
“Personally, I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. It didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to breakthrough. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”
