Woman mauled by crocodile while fetching water from Lake Victoria

A 32-year-old woman has died after she was attacked and mauled by a crocodile at Kopiata beach, in Siaya County on Sunday evening.

The woman who has been identified as Elizabeth Akinyi Oketch had gone to fetch water at the beach on the shores of Lake Victoria when she met her untimely death.

According to the acting Assistant Chief Esau Oduru, the woman was with her daughter and had already filled four out of the six jericans they had, when she was attacked by the crocodile.

Oduru stated that the woman was attacked and thrown into the water as the daughter watched helplessly.

The daughter, who was unhurt, raised alarm before members of the public rushed to the beach though efforts to rescue her mother bore no fruit.

The administrator who confirmed the incident, said members of the public through support from local fishermen later managed to retrieve the body from the lake.

Oduru added that the badly mutilated body was later moved to Madiany sub-county hospital mortuary to await postmortem examination.
