Former international, Victor Ikpeba has backed Stanley Nwabali to retain his position as Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper.

Nwabali has come under intense criticism following his inconsistent performance for the Super Eagles.

Udinese shot stopper, Maduka Okoye has been recalled to the team to add further competition to the goalkeeping position.

Okoye has earned rave reviews for his superlative display since returning to action following a two-month suspension for his alleged involvement in a betting scandal.

The 26-year-old’s invitation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs has been warmly received by fans.

Ikpeba however insisted that Nwabali should maintain his position as the number one goalkeeper.

“Maduka Okoye is back, but Nwabali remains the Super Eagles No 1 despite the recent concerns, At this point, all the players are needed” Ikpeba said on Monday Night Football.
