A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has identified former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as strong contenders from Southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu made the remarks while stressing the strategic importance of pairing either Obi or Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the next general election.

He spoke during an interactive X Space discussion titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027.”

According to him, combining Atiku with either Obi or Amaechi would create a formidable political force across the country.

“So for me, if we have him (Atiku) with Peter Obi or Amaechi, these are strong contenders in the South. Everybody may be saying ‘I want to run,’ but only one person can run,” Momodu said.

He added that Obi, in particular, has strong prospects in any future presidential contest.

“I believe Peter Obi stands a very good chance. Rotimi Amaechi is also a very experienced politician when it comes to winning presidential elections; don’t forget the role he played for Buhari twice,” he stated.

Momodu also predicted an imminent mass defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC, arguing that many party members are beginning to see the PDP as politically restricted.

“The majority of people in the PDP will migrate to the ADC when they realize there is a total roadblock. You can already see developments. My good friend and brother, Governor Ademola Adeleke, moved to the Accord Party because he felt he had reached a dead end in the PDP. His election is also coming up soon in 2026, so there is an urgent need to agree on a new direction,” he said.
