Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has said Wout Weghorst “lacks the quality” to be a striker at the club.
Neville was reacting to the Red Devils’ 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.
Second-half goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson condemned United to defeat at St James’ Park.
The result has seen the Magpies leapfrog Erik ten Hag’s men into third-place in the table.
Weghorst has scored just twice in 18 games for United and is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League, but has received credit for his pressing and hold up play.
Against Newcastle, Weghorst was subbed off for Anthony Martial after an hour, and Neville said on Sky Sports: “He does play his part. It’s a big issue.
“He doesn’t deserve to be criticised, I think he is doing his very best. He works as hard as he possibly can but he just lacks the quality that a player in that position should have at Manchester United.”
