Former Chelsea defender, Terry Phelan has named Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe as the only player who is as big as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment.
Messi and Ronaldo have been the two outstanding players in world football in recent times.
But neither the Argentina captain nor the Portugal captain are part of this season’s UEFA Champions League as they have already left European football.
Messi plays for Inter Miami, while Ronaldo plies his trade for Al-Nassr.
The duo have broken countless records in football and are in the twilight of their respective careers, as Messi is now 36 and Ronaldo is 38.
Hence, fans are eagerly anticipating to see which player can carry on both Messi and Ronaldo’s legacy in the competition.
However, Phelan feels Mbappe is the only player who can carry the baton for the next generation.
“There are wonderful players, probably not as big as Messi or Ronaldo. Only Mbappe is at that level,” Phelan said (as per Hindustan Times).
“If you look around, there are still some quality players.”
