The Milan City Council has approved a proposal to sell the San Siro Stadium and the surrounding land to AC Milan and Inter Milan.

This decision allows the clubs to proceed with their plans to demolish the majority of the existing stadium and build a new, modern arena.um and build a new, modern arena. The Milan City Council approved the sale of the San Siro area to Milan and Inter on Monday, September 29, 2025, with 24 votes in favour and 20 against.

The sale was made possible following the abstentions of most members, reducing the threshold required for a majority vote, which proved vital in getting the proposal over the line. Most councillors from the Democratic Party agreed to vote in favour of the proposal, while others criticised the decision of the Presidents of both clubs, Beppe Marotta and Paolo Scaroni.

The move allows Inter and Milan to move forward with plans for a new, privately owned stadium on the historic site, ending decades of uncertainty over San Siro’s future. The amendments to the proposal were discussed, including one for accessibility criteria to be compliant in the new project and initiatives to help boost sustainability.

What is next for AC Milan and Inter Milan after the sale of San Siro?

AC Milan and Inter Milan will then be able to begin the demolition of the stadium, to build an ultra-modern ground with 71,500 seats by 2031. The project will cost both clubs €1.2 billion.

When was the San Siro built?

The San Siro was built in 1926 and is set to be demolished 100 years later.
