Medical scare prompts retirement decision

The 34-year-old was hospitalised after collapsing on an exercise bike during an interval test at São Paulo’s training centre.

He was admitted to intensive care for monitoring, where medical examinations confirmed vasovagal syncope, which can cause sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Oscar has since informed São Paulo of his intention to end his career, with a formal announcement expected imminently.

The decision follows consultations with the club and medical professionals.

Health concerns resurface

Oscar’s return to his boyhood club last December had already been disrupted by a fractured vertebra, during which early warning signs of a possible heart issue were reportedly identified.

The latest incident has heightened concerns and accelerated his decision to prioritise long-term health.

The midfielder sought to reassure fans after his hospitalisation, posting on Instagram: “Everything will be alright, God willing.”

Career ends abruptly

The development brings an abrupt end to a career that spanned Brazil, Europe and Asia.

Oscar made 203 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 38 goals and winning two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the League Cup before completing a record move to Shanghai in 2017.

He spent nearly eight years in China, winning multiple trophies and establishing himself as one of the league’s standout players, before returning to São Paulo on a three-year deal last year.

Next steps

São Paulo are expected to work with Oscar and his medical team to finalise the retirement process and support his transition away from football.
