Nigerian rap star Olamide sparked major buzz after speaking to students at York University in Toronto, where he made a striking remark about the Afrobeats industry.
During an engaging Q&A session, the YBNL founder stated that, in his view, Wizkid is the greatest Afrobeats artist of this generation placing him right behind the iconic Fela Kuti.
Olamide pointed to their long-running musical partnership dating back to 2011, referencing hit tracks such as Street OT and Kana. He highlighted Wizkid’s consistent efforts in pushing Afrobeats onto the global map.
According to him:
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Wizkid we’ve made so many songs together. You know say after Fela, Wizkid is the greatest Afrobeats artist ever.”
His statement prompted loud cheers from the audience and quickly spread across social platforms. While many applauded his sincerity, others revived the ongoing debate about who truly sits at the top of Afrobeats.
The conversation at the event, which explored Nigerian music, culture, and the global rise of Afrobeats, became even more animated following Olamide’s viral declaration.
Whether fans agree with him or not, Olamide’s bold endorsement has once again placed the spotlight on the genre’s biggest stars and underscored how Nigerian music continues to take the world by storm.
