EPL: ‘Panic Buy’ – Rooney Questions Man United Decision To Sign Lammens

Former England striker, Wayne Rooney, has said he is at a loss as to why Manchester United signed goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.

According to Rooney, not using the Belgian goalkeeper in their 3-0 defeat to Man City in the Premier League on Sunday meant he should not have been signed at all.

Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon to once again earn bragging rights over their local rivals.

Erling Haaland netted a second half brace after Phil Foden’s first-half header gave the home side the lead.

Rooney expressed disappointment over the performance of his old club and was surprised by the Red Devils’ display, questioning why the Red Devils failed to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.

After he was banished by PSG, Donnarumma was linked with a move to Manchester United but it was Manchester City that signed the 26-year-old for just £26m.

Amorim kept faith in Altay Bayindir while his £18m deadline-day signing Senne Lammens sat on the bench.

Rooney described Lammens as a panic buy, saying it was a ‘concern’ that the manager did not feel able to throw the Belgian goalkeeper straight in.

“That was a worry as well… you don’t know if that was a panic buy,” Rooney said on his BBC podcast.

“I’ll be honest I don’t know too much about the new goalkeeper, I don’t think many of us have seen much about him. I’ll obviously do some research and have a look.

“But if you’re buying a new goalkeeper and he’s not ready to come in, that’s a bit of a concern.

“Obviously Donnarumma comes straight in and keeps a clean sheet. That’s the big difference and that was my point after the first game of the season when I said United should go and get Donnarumma.”
