Former Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), Monday Ubani, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a letter dated July 10, Ubani hailed measures taken by the President to tackle challenges in the country and pleaded that similar efforts be extended to tackling insecurity in Southeast.

The human rights lawyer said the first step towards ensuring peace in Southeast is a political solution to incarceration of Kanu and urged the President to release him.

Ubani’s letter read in parts,

“… Nnamdi Nkanu’s continued detention … gives me serious cause for concern.

“That the matter is not being given expeditious consideration further is depressing.

“My worry is some criminal elements in the region have latched on to this to keep the region under serious insecurity, loss of lives and criminality.

“They have destroyed the economic prospects of the region by determining days when people shall come out to pursue their daily economic activities.

“Mr President, I plead that you employ a political solution to Kanu’s matter as a father of the nation and eradicate the blood bath and criminality that shape the life of Southeast.

“Mazi Kanu should be released to governors and leaders of the region with the understanding he keeps the peace for the sake of the region.

“Several governors and leaders of the region are ready for such a deal that will see the restoration of peace.

“Mr President, the ball is in your court to start the healing process in Southeast by releasing Kanu from detention…”
