Afrobeats singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has opened up about his long struggle with fear of failure, which he linked to his father’s constant criticism while growing up.
In a candid conversation with TV host Frank Edoho, the “Who Is Your Guy” crooner revealed that his father’s negative remarks during his childhood made him internalise self-doubt and low self-worth.
Spyro admitted that those words haunted him for years, creating a deep-seated fear that he would never succeed, saying, “My dad always told me I was a failure, and I began to believe it.”
Faith helped me overcome my insecurities
The singer recounted how his personal relationship with God became the turning point in his emotional and professional journey.
He said that his renewed faith gave him confidence and clarity, helping him overcome years of fear and disappointment.
“God changed my mindset,” Spyro said, adding that prayer and self-belief transformed his outlook and opened doors to new opportunities in music and business.
From doubt to stardom
Before achieving fame, Spyro nearly quit music and briefly ventured into interior design to make ends meet.
However, his breakthrough came in 2022 with the viral success of Who Is Your Guy, which resonated across Africa for its uplifting message about friendship and loyalty.
The remix featuring Tiwa Savage in 2023 further cemented his place in Afrobeats, earning him the Best Collaboration Award at the 16th Headies and restoring his belief that faith and persistence pay off.
