A 23-year-old man, Jackson Manamela, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for r****g an 84-year-old woman in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Mahwelereng Regional Court in Pretoria sentenced Manamela on Tuesday, June 21, 2023, after convicting him on robbery and rape charges.

When the May 2022 incident happened, Manamela was on bail after he had been arrested for housebreaking with the intention to steal and commit robbery at the same woman’s house.

The court heard that Manamela found the 84-years-old woman cooking outside her shack on May 9, 2022 at Millennium village under Mahwelereng policing precinct outside Mokopane,” Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba narrated.

“He unexpectedly attacked and stabbed the elderly victim with a pair of scissors on the forehead and dragged her into the shack,” Ledwaba said.

Manamela robbed the woman of R70 in cash and her social grant card. He proceeded to rape the elderly woman before he fled the scene.

“Afterwards, the victim went to the neighbour’s house and informed them about the ordeal and police were immediately summoned to the scene.

“Robbery and rape cases were immediately opened and the suspect was subsequently apprehended after just three days on May 12, 2022,” said Ledwaba.

The case was transferred to Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigations, and Sergeant Ramokone Tinah Matsimbi was assigned to probe the matter.

“Through her dedication and commitment, she (Matsimbi) ensured that Jackson Manamela was never granted bail after it was discovered that he was out on bail for housebreaking with the intention to steal and commit robbery on December 2, 2019 committed against the same 84-year-old victim,” said Ledwaba.

The two cases were combined and the accused was found guilty on the following counts:

Count 1 – robbery – three years imprisonment.

Count 2 – rape – life imprisonment

Count 3 – housebreaking with the intention to rob and commit robbery – 15 years imprisonment.

The sentences will run concurrently and Manamela was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

LIB had reported that kidnappers invaded the victims’ residence opposite the Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Abaji last Tuesday night, October 21, and whisked away the principal, his wife, and his daughter. The principal’s wife, Mrs. Rakiya Zakari Yelwa, was ordered to return home by the kidnappers when she could not walk fast. The principal, while narrating his experience to Daily Trust at his residence on Sunday, October 25, said he and his daughter were freed on Saturday night after paying a N3.1 million ransom. He said life in the kidnappers’ den was like “hell,” and he prays that no one experiences such trauma. The principal said he and his daughter trekked through the forest throughout the night until they arrived at the kidnappers’ camp “On that very night, we walked throughout the night till dawn. As the morning set in, they kept us in a valley until it was getting dark again before we continued trekking until we arrived at their camp,” he said. According to him, his abductors fed him and his daughter with garri and yam, which, he said, they harvested from some people’s farms near the camp. He said the kidnappers used pieces of cloth to cover their faces until they were freed around 6:45 pm on Saturday at a forest that borders Toto LGA of Nasarawa and Kogi states. He added that apart from the N3.1 million cash ransom, the kidnappers also collected two cartons of malt, one carton of milk, bread, and some packets of cigarettes The principal thanked his colleagues, friends, and family members for their support and prayers. He also commended the vigilantes for their swift response during the attack at his residence.
