International music icon Onika Maraj-Petty, widely recognized as Nicki Minaj, has drawn worldwide attention to the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria, calling for swift global intervention during a United Nations event hosted by US Ambassador Mike Waltz yesterday.
Minaj, who has increasingly spoken out on the issue in recent months, revealed that she was invited to speak after her posts on X (formerly Twitter) caught the ambassador’s notice.
She praised former US President Donald Trump for highlighting the issue and emphasized the importance of religious freedom. Minaj noted that her experiences in music have shown her the power of unity across cultures and faiths and stressed that everyone should have the right to practice their beliefs freely. She warned that religious expression is “under threat in too many places.”
“I want to thank President Trump for his leadership in addressing this critical issue and for calling for urgent measures to protect Christians in Nigeria, combat extremism, and stop violence against those simply exercising their right to freedom of religion,” Minaj said.
She continued, “In Nigeria, Christians are being attacked, displaced from their homes, and even killed. Churches are set on fire, families are devastated, and entire communities live in constant fear because of how they worship.” She underscored that the situation requires immediate action and clarified that her advocacy is not politically motivated.
“This is not about taking sides or creating division,” she said. “It’s about uniting people and standing for humanity.”
Ending her remarks, Minaj reiterated, “This isn’t a political statement. It’s about standing against injustice. This has always been my principle throughout my career, and I will continue to uphold it.”
Her statements follow Trump’s recent consideration of adding Nigeria to the list of Countries of Particular Concern. The former president warned that continued attacks on Christians could lead the United States to withdraw aid and support from Nigeria and even consider military intervention.
