Nigerian singer and songwriter Omah Lay has once again stirred reactions online after sharing a heartfelt reflection on his emotional battles and past relationships.

The “Understand” hitmaker, known for his deeply introspective style, took to Instagram earlier this week to speak honestly about love, vulnerability, and the journey toward self-awareness.

In his posts, Omah Lay revealed that he had previously fallen victim to emotional manipulation from former partners, particularly during times when he felt most exposed.

However, he noted that through self-discovery and personal growth, he has learned to recognise and avoid those unhealthy cycles.

“Since I became aware of the pattern, it doesn’t work anymore,” he wrote, hinting at a new phase in his emotional evolution.

His openness sparked mixed reactions among fans, with many expressing concern that the artist might once again be battling emotional distress.

This follows a worrying message he shared weeks earlier, where he wrote, “God please help me, I’m losing my mind again.”

Omah Lay has been vocal about his mental health journey in the past. In interviews and previous posts, he has discussed how fame, heartbreak, and personal experiences have influenced both his life and his music.

Often referred to as the pioneer of “Afro-depression,” the singer has carved out a unique niche defined by honesty and emotional depth.

Speaking with Billboard in 2024, Omah Lay expressed pride that fans coined the term based on their connection to his sound.

“I love that my music started something new. I didn’t even have to tell people it’s Afro-depression they just understood it by listening,” he said.

Despite his artistic success, many fans remain concerned about his wellbeing, noting that some of his most moving songs seem to stem from emotional pain.

While some see his transparency as a powerful way to normalise conversations about mental health, others have urged him to seek balance and protect his peace.

Omah Lay’s honesty continues to ignite discussions about the intersection of creativity, vulnerability, and mental wellness in the music industry a conversation that remains both necessary and timely.
