A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison for repeatedly r@ping his stepdaughter beginning when she was 10 years old and later impr3gnating her when she was 12. The Northern Cape regional court in South Africa delivered the judgment after the perpetrator argued that their s3xual relationship had been consensual, a claim the court dismissed as baseless.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, began assaulting the child between 2017 and 2020 while living with her and her mother. According to the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, the stepfather would wait until the household was asleep, assault the girl, and threaten her into silence. The abuse remained hidden for years until the victim’s mother noticed her weight gain in 2020 and took her to a clinic, where the pregnancy was confirmed.
The trial faced significant delays as the accused repeatedly changed legal representation. Prosecutor Darryl Bromkamp ultimately presented compelling evidence, including witness testimony and a victim impact statement detailing the profound and lasting trauma suffered by the girl. The court found the victim and supporting witnesses credible while rejecting the defendant’s testimony.
In addition to the life sentences, the court declared the man unfit to work with children, prohibited him from possessing a firearm, and ordered his inclusion in the National Register for Sex Offenders. The Northern Cape director of public prosecutions welcomed the sentence, describing it as a victory for justice and child protection that demonstrates the legal system’s commitment to holding perpetrators of s3xual violence fully accountable.
