AC Milan are reportedly edging closer to an agreement with Crystal Palace over the signing of striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, but two major hurdles remain before the French forward can arrive at San Siro.

Italian reports on Friday suggested that Milan already have a personal agreement with Mateta, who is keen on a January switch to Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 27-year-old is set to be offered a contract running until 2030, with wages estimated at around €3.5 million per season.

Transfer fee and timing

While terms with the player appear close, Milan are still assessing whether a deal can be completed during the January transfer window.

If an agreement is reached this month, the Rossoneri are prepared to pay up to €35 million, including bonuses. However, that figure would drop to around €30 million, bonuses included, should the move be postponed until the summer.

Palace need a replacement

The first major obstacle is Crystal Palace’s need to secure a replacement striker. Manager Oliver Glasner is reportedly unwilling to sanction Mateta’s departure in January without a suitable alternative in place.

A loan move for Aston Villa’s Evann Guessand alone is not expected to satisfy Palace’s requirements.

Nkunku sale still unresolved

The second issue lies on Milan’s end. The club must finalise the departure of Christopher Nkunku to create space in the squad and balance the books.

Milan would prefer a permanent sale, but they are also open to a loan deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy, depending on the structure of any offer received.

Until both conditions are met, Milan’s move for Mateta remains on hold despite progress on personal terms.
