The Nigeria international opted for the procedure after weeks of consultations and has consequently been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The surgery addressed a long-standing issue in his right knee that had limited his availability and performance.

Boniface confirmed the next phase of his recovery through a short video shared on Snapchat, showing him working with a physiotherapist.

Difficult season cut short

The 2025/26 campaign proved challenging for the striker, who struggled for form and fitness.

Boniface failed to score in 11 Bundesliga appearances, registering two assists during his loan spell at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen before the injury forced him to stop playing.

Medical advice initially recommended immediate surgery, but the player sought further opinions before taking a final decision earlier this month.

The operation is expected to require an extended rehabilitation period, with no definitive timeline yet set for his return to competitive football.

Focus shifts to full recovery

Boniface will now focus on a full recovery, aiming to return stronger ahead of the next season. However, injuries have been a recurring concern in his career.

The striker has previously suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries since turning professional, making long-term fitness a key priority going forward. Talking with the aid of a support device, indicating the start of a structured recovery programme.
