Former Nigeria international, Victor Ikpeba has named Liverpool legend, Mohamed Salah as the greatest African player to have played in the English Premier League.
Last week, Liverpool announced that Salah will conclude his illustrious career with the club at the end of this season.
Salah, who has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for the Reds, possesses an impressive collection of trophies that includes two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, two League Cups, and an FA Community Shield.
Ikpeba characterized the Egyptian forward as the greatest African player to have ever played in the Premier League.
“Considering other remarkable Africans who have participated in the Premier League, his statistics are remarkable, and I believe he should be acknowledged as one of the finest African players to have ever competed in the league.
“I would assert that he is the finest. He made the decision to remain for an additional season, which is quite commendable. Perhaps due to familial obligations, he entered into a new contract. He no longer possesses the stamina he had during his early years at Liverpool.
“He has been the top scorer in the Premier League on three occasions (four times in total). I do not believe any African player has achieved such a feat. As a winner of the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, he will be remembered for an extended period. However, this season has been disappointing; age has taken its toll on him,” he said.
Since the announcement of Salah’s departure from Liverpool, many top clubs in Europe, Saudi Arabia and the United States of America have reportedly indicated interest to sign the Egyptian.
