The major road linking Umuenyere Alayi with Item communities in Bende local government area of Abia State has collapsed.

This is following erosion menace, exposing villagers and travellers to danger of falling into the gully.

The depth of the gully has created fear among the villagers that use the road.

Affected indigenes of Alayi, Item and other transporters, who spoke on the development, said the erosion site started developing from a little spot before it suddenly worsened last week.

They appealed to the Abia State government to immediately close the gully and carry out other erosion prevention works on the road to avert similar experience in future.

The community members who placed green leaves around the collapsed section of Alayi-Item road, explained that the measure was to alert approaching vehicles from crashing into the ditch.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Bende local government area of Abia State, Uwabunkeonye Bassey on Monday, visited the site of the collapsed road, to sympathize with the affected communities and other road users.

The council boss assured the communities that the Abia State government and Bende local government area will not delay in addressing the situation.

He assured the people that an access road would be created for them temporarily, adding that the collapsed section of the road would receive government attention.
