Chelsea has completed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The 24-year-old German international has agreed a five-year contract with the club and will be Chelsea’s second contract signing of the summer after winger Hakim Ziyech of Ajax.

The Premier League club agreed to pay 50 million euros (45 million pounds) to trigger the dismissal clause of Werner, who will earn more than 10 million euros (9 million pounds) per season with Chelsea.

On the occasion of his move to Chelsea, Werner said: “I am delighted to sign for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to join this great club.

Of course I want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans for four fantastic years. You will be in my heart forever. I am looking forward to next season with my new team mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans.

Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.

Chelsea Director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very pleased that Timo Werner has chosen Chelsea.

He is a player who has been in demand throughout Europe and it is no surprise that he is this rare mixture of young and exciting and yet established and proven.

We can hardly wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season.

Timo Werner will spend the rest of the Bundesliga season at RB Leipzig before joining his new team mates in July.

So far he has played 157 games for RB Leipzig, scored 93 goals and provided 40 assists for the German club.
