A 57-year-old woman, Sikirat Jamiu, on Monday, drowned after falling into a well at the Ile-Agunko compound, Adeta area, in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

It was reported that the woman went to fetch water for domestic use but lost control at the tip of the well and fell into it.

It was learnt that the woman drowned before the neighbours realized that she had fallen into the well.

In a bid to recover her corpse, a neighbour, Muhammad Jamiu, contacted officials of the Kwara State Fire Service who stormed the scene and recovered Jamiu’s corpse.

The head of Media and Publicity, Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, in a statement, said Jamiu’s corpse had been handed over to her relatives.

He said,

“The terrible incident occurred on Monday evening around 6.42pm and the Brigade was summoned through an exchange telephone call by one Muhammad Jamiu living in that neighbourhood.

“However, firemen were able to recover the corpse from the well and later handed it over to one Alfa Abdulganiyu Akuko, a family member of the deceased, in the presence of the policemen attached to the Adewole Division in Ilorin.

“According to the report, the victim woman went to fetch water at the well and during the process of fetching, one of her legs suddenly slipped off the ground and eventually tumbled down into the well”.

Adekunle said the state Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Olumuyiwa Falade, expressed sadness over the incident and urged the general public to be more careful in their day-to-day activities and desist from sending under-age children to fetch water in domestic wells.
